    How to Approach the New Testament

    Course Instructor: Dr. C. Scott Fowler

    Course Description: How did the New Testament come into existence? How has it been transmitted down through the centuries? Why do we consider it to be authoritative? How can we best approach it so that we can know what it means, why it matters, and how it applies to our lives and the lives of those we influence?

    These are just a few of the questions that will arise as we discover concepts such as

    •  Inerrancy and Inspiration
    • Textual Criticism (the science of the reconstruction of the original autographs and how we can be confident that our modern day Bible translations are faithful to the original autographs)
    • Exegesis in comparison to Eisegesis and
    • Inductive Bible Study

    We will also outline the proper way to do a

    • Proper Biblical Word Study

    We’ll learn something of the New Testament’s original language—Koine Greek—and, before we are finished, we will have encountered the study of

    • Biblical Hermeneutics and the proper approach to Biblical interpretation

    All of these concepts are necessary in order to approach the New Testament correctly and with confidence.

    Course Objectives: At the completion of this course, the diligent student will have a deeper understanding of the origin and transmission of the New Testament, why it is claimed as authoritative for the believer, and be able to approach the study of the New Testament through intentional, ordered steps that will produce balanced, responsible interpretation, and understand why—based on its authority—that any study of the New Testament is not complete until its truths have been applied to the one who studies it.

    In-Process Assessment: Along the way, the student will frequently encounter assessment videos in which the instructor will ask a question, give the student a chance to pause the video and settle on an answer, then resume the video and hear the answer with some explanation from the instructor.

    If we are trying to say anything through the Eight Essentials of Discipleship (EED) program . . . 

    . . . surely it is that discipleship is important, not optional, and that it should be pursued intentionally. Having said that, the mission of EED is to provide an intentional path to discipleship that is theologically sound, spiritually transforming, culturally relevant, and relationally genuine

    The word “program” can be kind of a dead word (or at least one that seems dead). But, in this case, any suggestions about discipleship that do not result in some kind of “program” designed to enact those values has missed the point. Every attempt has been made in the formulation of the EED ideal, and thus of this material, to produce something that can be immediately put into practice or at least to inform some kind of attempt at discipleship.

    You can clearly see the eight essentials in what we call the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) and in the behavior of the early church as seen in Acts 2:42-47. Those verses affirm the importance of discipleship and reveal the following eight essentials of discipleship:

    1-Scripture                                           5-Ministry

    2-Worship                                            6-Service

    3-Prayer/Spiritual Disciplines              7-Evangelism (or outreach)

    4-Fellowship                                        8-Stewardship

    The Daily Prayer Project, in its online form, is a five week blended course in which the content of the course is given through Power Point videos. Course interaction will be engaged either through conference calls or video conferencing.

    The course is based on the book by Dr. Scott Fowler called, Contending for the Habit of Daily Prayer, Revised and Expanded, and, like the book, is designed to help those who struggle with maintaining a genuine, dynamic, meaningful, DAILY prayer time to learn to cultivate the Secret Place.

    Hebrews 12:4-11 speaks of God's discipline. The KJV uses the word chastisement. Modern versions typically use the word discipline. But when you dig deep into the Greek word lying beneath the English, a great and encouraging discovery is made.
